Q ant start by explaining the reason for my visit to Ponferrada . Well, this summer I have been on holiday in Cantabria (I'll do a post about this cute way), and there I visited Comillas, a beautiful seaside town, where I met a wonderful work the incredible Gaudí, El Capricho . So I was eager to see more of his works, and I remembered Episcopal Palace of Astorga was his work too, so, Ponferrada would be ideal to celebrate my birthday, they could visit Ponferrada, Astorga and Médulas . The problem is that in winter is very cold, the days are shorter and the weather is quite enough, so in the end we could not visit Astorga, but left for another visit, as the Bierzo area in general is so pretty I'm already looking forward to visiting again.

We arrived Friday night to Ponferrada (its name comes from "an iron settings" iron bridge, as a Bishop of Astorga called Osmundo, he built a bridge reinforced with iron for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago could cross the River Sil, which passes through Ponferrada). It was cold that you can not imagine. We dined in the city center and then went for a stroll through its streets, which were full of beautiful Christmas decorations.

On Saturday, after dinner, we went to Médulas , old gold mining, belonging to the Roman Empire, and declared by UNESCO " Heritage " in December 1997 . I recommend watching these two pages in order to appreciate this wonderful place, Médulas and Tourism Bierzo. On the way, we have a cold that was not normal for four in the afternoon.
On reaching the village, trying to climb to the mine itself, but between he had to walk 1.8 km (as though in many websites that could put us go by car, once we reached the village, a sign over a car prevented non-residents), including cold it was and that when we arrived and would be dark, we decided not to upload, and visit the Archaeological Hall Médulas and the village itself.
.
Now we come to the village of Carucedo , whose lake, was caused as a result Roman gold exploitation.
At the foot of this beautiful castle we find the Church of San Andrés (S. XVII) , inside which is the Christ Fortress, which was moved there, from the Castle Chapel.

We enter a little more and came to the Plaza de la Virgen de la Encina , Where we can see two great wonders, the Basilica de la Encina and Relo Tower j .
Across the square is the Basilica de la Encina , inside which houses the patron saint of the City, Virgen de la Encina . Legend who had been brought from the Holy Land for the Santo Toribio, Bishop of Astorga, and the Knights Templars, they found the statue of the Virgin in the hole an oak, which had been hidden to protect against invasions of the Muslims, adopting the nickname of the tree that had been found. La Virgen de la Encina, is one of the few Black Madonnas exists, and is also known as "La Morena ."

In Archaeological Hall we have a large model of the whole area, with educational signs about mining Roman, Roman settlements, recreation Scenes of everyday life, reproductions of equipment used by the Romans, a room that was used for the projection of videos. In short, a whole life told us that the Romans had been there at that time, and the complicated process of extracting gold.

is now starting to get dark, so we returned back to Ponferrada, intending to visit Castillo Templar.
This castle is located on a former pre-roman castro, after would be a Roman citadel, which in S. XI, would be rebuilt and fortified. In 1178, Alfonso IX, gives the town of Ponferrada to Knights Templar, with the mission to protect pilgrims on their way Santiago de Compostela. The castle was built in the S. XI, and was owned by the Templars until they disbanded in 1312, from the Castle to the Crown of Leon, and later to the Catholic Kings.
But during the French occupation in 1811, was ordered destroyed to prevent it from falling into their hands. But this was not the only misfortune he suffered this castle, then in 1850 the City sold its walls and used its stones, also leases the pasture area inside and even allows excavation to locate a football field. But fortunately in 1924 is granted the rank of National Monument, which causes all these atrocities do not continue.
Well, as I said, our intention was to visit, but had closed at six, so until Sunday, we could not go inside. But since we were there, I take out all these pictures outside, and visit other landmarks near this.

came the dinner, so we got on the way to Centro Comercial El Rosal , whose name reminded me to another shopping center is in La Coruña, Los Rosales. The mall was recently opened near, and is pretty nice to tease, I was a little freaked out, because Lugo is the provincial capital has a mall As Spa is the largest in Galicia, but that was far from Ponferrada larger, and that it is not Ponferrada provincial capital, and has a population of about 66,000 inhabitants, in short, I've been delighted, the center is beautiful.
On Sunday we did more than visit the Castle, and return back to Lugo, a year more to my back, and with a mad desire to return to visit this beautiful area. But next time try to be summer, the days are longer, and make better time, as caught a cold, beautiful, beautiful!
